Dear [School District Board or Specific Contact Name],

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to inquire about the status of the high school band teacher position at Buena High School, which has not yet been posted.

It has come to our attention, through communication with the school’s principal, that there may be a hiring freeze currently in place. Parents of students involved in the band program were informed that this freeze is the reason a new band teacher has not been hired. Understandably, this has raised concerns within the school community about the future of the program.

We have also been told that a final decision will be made by Friday, April 11, 2025, at 5:00 PM regarding whether the current music director, Mr. Duchai, will return this school year. If it is determined that he will not be returning, the position must be posted immediately. Any delay beyond this point would significantly reduce the chances of attracting and hiring a high-quality band director, which would directly impact the strength and continuity of the music program.

In addition, delays in posting and hiring a new director before the last day of school on June 5, 2025, will seriously hinder essential planning and preparation for the summer and fall. While band camp—typically held in July—is a key focus, it’s important to note that the impact extends far beyond just the marching band. All music ensembles, including concert band, jazz band, and other instrumental groups, will be affected. These programs collectively serve over 200 students, many of whom participate in multiple ensembles. A delay in hiring a director limits the time needed for planning music selections, organizing rehearsal schedules, and preparing for performances and competitions. This not only affects the students’ educational experience but also places unnecessary stress on the program as a whole.

The high school band is a cornerstone of the school’s culture and a vital part of students’ development and experience. Prompt and transparent action is essential to ensure the program remains strong and continues to thrive.

We respectfully request clarification on the hiring freeze and ask for confirmation that, if Mr. Duchai does not return, the district will act swiftly to begin the hiring process without delay.

Thank you for your time and attention. We look forward to your response and a resolution that reflects the importance of this program to our students and the wider community.
